Neurofeedback, A Fearless Treatment for PTSD
Caring for PTSD Through Neurofeedback
The bittersweet part of life is that you never know what it’s going to bring. PTSD is a completely normal thing to go through after experiencing or going through a traumatic event. You might commonly think of PTSD as a disorder soldiers develop from experiencing combat—while that’s oftentimes true, it’s also common for people to develop PTSD after other life-threatening events. Neurofeedback is a great and holistic approach to caring for PTSD.
PTSD and Neurofeedback
PTSD is a mental health condition that is developed after a traumatic event or a series of events such as a natural disaster, combat, sexual assault or another life-threatening event. PTSD happens because the brain and body react in fight or flight as a result of a life-threatening event, and this is a natural occurrence we develop to protect ourselves. Symptoms of PTSD include anxiety, nightmares, insomnia, unwanted thoughts and moods such as irritability as well as a desire for isolation.
PTSD and other anxiety disorders affect approximately 3.5% of U.S. adults, and an estimated one in 11 people will be diagnosed with PTSD in their lifetime. Women are twice as likely as men to have it. PTSD is a haunting disorder that affects the everyday lives of those who suffer from it, but we thankfully have a method to care for the disorder in a healthy way: neurofeedback. A number of military bases currently use neurofeedback and average 16 sessions for the elimination of symptoms of PTSD, with a range of 10 to 25 sessions.
How Neurofeedback Can Help with PTSD
PTSD is oftentimes treated with medication, and while medication typically works to subdue severely anxious symptoms caused by PTSD, these medications can be addictive and only offer a temporary solution to the actual problem. Alternatively, neurofeedback is a noninvasive process that collects information from the brain and creates a visual map out of it. Professionals can then analyze that information to then determine the root cause of a neurological disorder such as PTSD and then administer a healthy and holistic solution to better the quality of life for the patient.
Neurofeedback is holistic and safe and is a great solution because it doesn’t just mask symptoms; it focuses on reshaping the negative and repetitive neurological pathways that remind the individual of the trauma and “un-trains” these damaged areas for the wellbeing of the patient. Neurofeedback sessions aim to reduce any anxieties and symptoms a patient with PTSD might be experiencing, including accompanying symptoms like sleep and panic attacks. Learning the unique functions of the patient’s mind, neurofeedback therapists work individually with clients to help alleviate these problems in a personalized and holistic way. Put the past behind you with the help of neurofeedback.
